핵안전연대 "방폐물 반송은 '관리사고'" |
|
경주핵안전연대는 최근 한국방사성폐기물관리공단의 방사성폐기물 반송 조치를 '핵폐기물 관리사고'로 규정하고 철저한 안전 대책을 촉구했다.
경주핵안전연대는 8월 23일 기자회견을 열고 "방폐물관리공단이 올 1월 월성원전의 방사성폐기물을 반입한 뒤 2월에 부적합한 464드럼을 확인하고도 6개월 후에 반송을 결정한 것은 상식적으로 납득할 수가 없다"고 주장했다.
또 "방사성폐기물 처리 기준이 교과부와 방폐물관리공단이 서로 다른 것은 국내 핵폐기물 관리 시스템의 난맥상을 드러낸 것"이라며 "이런 상황에서는 경주시민들이 결코 안전하게 생활할 수 없다"고 강조했다.
이와 함께 "반송되는 464드럼은 방사능만을 따졌을 때 고준위 핵폐기물 기준의 18배를 초과하는 고농도"라면서 "지금까지 정부와 공단이 말한 중저준위 핵폐기물의 안전성이 얼마나 허구적인지를 단적으로 보여주는 것"이라고 말했다.
핵안전연대는 "반입된 2천드럼 전량을 반송 조치하고 관련자를 문책하는 한편 핵폐기물 반입에 따른 정보를 시민들에게 실시간 공개하는 등 방폐장 안전성을 원점에서 재검토해야 한다"고 촉구했다.
이에 대해 공단측은 "방사성폐기물 인수후 발생기관과 협의를 거쳐 최선의 방안을 모색하는 과정에서 시일이 걸린 것"이라며 "반송 폐기물은 알파방사선 방출핵종과 열 발생량이 '0'으로 해외의 분류기준으로는 저준위에 속하는 것"이라고 해명했다.
또 "시민들이 요구하면 반입된 2천드럼 뿐 아니라 향후 반입되는 폐기물 정보도 적극 공개하고 반입량과 드럼당 방사능 총량 등을 실시간 모니터할 수 있는 체계도 구축할 계획"이라고 말했다.
방폐물관리공단은 8월 18일 반입된 방사성폐기물 2천드럼 가운데 인수기준에 부적합한 월성원전 반입분 464드럼을 반송 조치하기로 결정했다.
