경주시가 매년 전국 최대 규모의 초등축구대회를 개최하는 등 축구도시의 명성을 쌓아가고 있으나 정작 지역의 초등학교 축구팀은 1개에 불과해 아쉬움을 낳고 있다.

8월11일 경주시에 따르면 지난달 29일 개막해 오는 13일까지 열리는 전국 최대 규모의 2010화랑대기 전국초등학교 축구대회 겸 유소년 상비군 선발전에 전국에서 189개 초등학교가 참가했으나 경주에서는 1개 초등학교만 출전했다.

경주의 초등학교 축구팀은 입실초교가 유일하기 때문으로 입실초교는 이번 대회에서 8강 진출에 그쳤다.

또 중ㆍ고등학교 팀도 무산중과 경주정보고 각 1개팀에 불과하다.

이처럼 지역 학교의 축구 기반이 초라하기 그지없자 더 많은 학교 축구부를 창단해야 한다는 목소리가 높아지고 있다.

체육계 한 인사는 "학교 축구팀이 적어 우수한 선수 양성이 어렵고 뛰어난 기량을 갖춘 선수들은 진학을 위해 다른 지역으로 빠져나갈 수 밖에 없는 상황"이라며 "전국 최대규모 축구대회를 매년 개최한다고 자랑하면서도 지역에서 1개 학교만이 참가하는 것은 모양새가 좋지 않다"고 지적했다.

시는 6개 인조축구장과 6개 천연잔디구장 등 뛰어난 축구 인프라로 화랑대기 축구대회를 올해까지 8차례 유치하면서 역사문화관광도시 외에도 축구도시임을 자부해왔다.

시는 또 2008년에는 K3리그에 참가하고 있는 경주시민축구단을 창단했고 겨울에는 축구 동계훈련캠프를 마련해 매년 1천500여명의 선수들이 경주에서 훈련을 하는 등 축구를 통한 도시 홍보에 열을 올리고 있지만 선수 인프라는 열악한 상황이다.

경주시 관계자는 "초등학교 축구부 창단을 위해 시에서 적극적인 지원 의사를 밝히며 학교측과 협의를 해봤지만 창단에 선뜻 나서는 학교가 없다"라고 말했다.
