어머니의 애달픈 마음만
있었다.

돌을 높이 쌓으면 소원이 이루어진다　　
어머니의 기도
　음력 정월 초하룻날을 신일(愼日)， 담도(憺?)라고 옛 문헌은 기록하고 있다. 이 말에는 근신 즉 삼간다는 뜻과 경거망동을 하지 말라는 뜻이 담겨있다.
　설날을 또 세수(歲首)， 원단(元旦)， 원일(元日)， 신원(新元)이라고 하여 한해의 운수를 새해첫날에 기원했다. 이날 아침 우리는 조상께 세찬(歲饌)과 세주(歲酒)를 마련해 정성껏 차례(次禮)를 올린다.
　한해의 시작을 조상과 함께한다는 이런 효사상은 아름다운 우리 풍속이다. 아이들이 새 옷을 입고 어른들을 찾아 인사를 드리는 세배풍속도 살아 있는 고유의 미풍이다. 세뱃돈이 목적처럼 된 듯한 요즈음이라 해도 굳이 나무라고 싶지 않다.
　옛날에는 사돈집에 문안비(問安婢)를 보내어 문안을 드렸다는 기록이 있다. 또 우리가 어렸을 때는 칼을 쓰지 않는 날， 맨발로 밖에 나가지 않는 날， 불을 사용하지 않는 날 등등 보름이 지나기까지 조심스러운 하루하루를 보냈던 기억이 있다.
　집집마다 책력을 마련해 한해 닥쳐올 운수를 미리 점치는 일이 성행했는데， 지금은 그것이 지하철역에서 버젓이 사주를 보는 풍경으로 바뀌었다.
　가장 큰 명절인 설은 윷놀이와 널뛰기로， 보름까지는 흥겨운 농악으로 보냈으나 정월 대보름이 되면 그 놀이들도 대부분 끝난다.
　그러나 이 무렵 나는 학교에서 돌아와 언제나 어머니가 정결하게 몸단장을 하고 둥근 달을 향해 아들， 딸 잘되게 해달라고 빌고 계시는 모습을 보곤 했다. 해마다 반복되는 광경이었다. 가족의 만사형통을 천지신명께 빌었던 그 어머니의 기도가 하늘을 감동시켰는지， 우리 가족 모두가 지금까지 건강하게 잘 살아가고 있다.
　자식들이 몸이 아프거나 힘든 일이 있을 때 어머니는 본능적으로 자신의 몸을 학대해서라도 가정과 자식들에게 닥칠 어려움을 감당하시려는 의지가 있었다.
　우리 자식들의 몸 구석구석에는 그 어머니의 살과 피， 정성을 모두 빼앗은 혈흔이 흐르고 있음을， 이 늦은 나이가 되어 이제야 알겠다.
　어머니는 몸이 불편하셨을 때에도 달을 향한 기원을 빠트리지 않았다.
　어머니가 가지신 모든 기(氣)를 아들에게 내어주려고 어머니는 빌고 또 빌었다. 휘영청 밝은 달이 중천에 뜨는 날이면， 나는 어김없이 자식 잘되라고 기원하시던 어머니의 얼굴이 둥근 달 속에 떠있어， 몸을 떤다.
　세상의 어두움을 밝게 하는 보름달의 빛처럼， 어머니의 사랑은 늘 그렇게 아들을 지켜주고 있다.
　그러나 남존여비의 관습에 묶여 괴롭고 서러운 길을 살아온 어머니의 그 한이 서린 듯， 밤이면 서럽게 울어대던 개구리의 울음소리를 이 도시에서 들을 수가 없는 것이 참으로 서운하다.
　자식 뒷바라지에 생을 바친 어머니의 고달픔을 어느 자식이 제대로 알아주고 있는가. 한으로 남을 그 서러운 애달픔을 이 아들마저 몰라주니， 어머니는 얼마나 큰 실망을 안고 계실까?
　넓은 세상 구경이라도 시켜드리고 싶으나， 다닐 기력마저 없으니 이 기막힌 사연을 어디에다 하소연할까.
　불교에서는 세상살이를 고해라 하고， 기독교에서는 슬픔과 근심， 걱정이 많은 곳이라고 한다.
　그 불교의 고해와 기독교의 슬픔을 모두 사신 어머니. 어떻게 어디에 편안히 모셔야 좋을까?
　기독교인들은 예수님의 이름으로 하나님께 기도드리고， 불교인들은 부처님께 소원을 빌며 기도한다.
　그러나 어머니가 가정과 자식을 위하여 천지신명께 은혜를 구하던 기도는， 모든 종교를 초월하여 간절함이 솟구치고 솟구치던 믿음의 기도였다.
　2006년을 여는 올 정월 초하루에도 어머니의 기도는 쉬지 않았다.
　가정을， 자식을， 위험에서 건질 것이란 확신을 가지고 어머니는 새해에도 간절한 마음으로 기도하신다.
　어머니의 기도는 영원을 구르는 사랑이다.
