가장 큰 행복은 효가 살아있는 세상에서 사는 것이다 |

레미콘회사를 경영하는 이종화 회장을 만날 일이 있어 가끔 퇴근 후에 전화를 하고 만나기를 시도했지만 좀처럼 약속을 잡기가 힘이 들었다.
80을 바라보는 연세이니 별다른 근무를 하는 것이 아닐텐데 하면서도 한편으로는 레미콘 전국연합회장이며, 레미콘회사 사장으로서 일이 바쁠 것은 틀림없겠지라는 생각을 했다. 그렇다고 하더라도 약속을 잡기가 이렇게 힘이 들까하고는 의아하게 생각했었다. 그러던 차에 8월 25일 갑자기 연락이 왔다. 이종화 사장의 모친이 별세하셨다는 부음이었다. 근무를 마치고 문상을 갔다.
세브란스 병원의 장례식장, 특실을 들어서니 조화가 조금의 여유도 주지 않고 꽉 차 있었다. 어림잡아 600개는 될 것 같았다. 대인관계의 폭이 넓었던 것이구나, 또 가까운 이들의 길흉사를 꼼꼼히 챙겼구나 하고 생각하였다. 권력을 가진 분도 아닌데 남들과 교류가 원만하지 않았다면 이렇게 많은 사람이 조화를 보내오지는 않았을 것이라는 생각이 들었다. 씨를 뿌리지 않고 싹이 나지 않듯이 주위의 사람들에게 봉사하지 않고서는 이 많은 조화가 올 수 없었을 것이다.
별세하신 노모가 104세였다고 했다. 그 말을 듣는 순간 이 분은 요즈음 세상에 보기드문 효자라는 생각이 들었다. 104세를 사시려면 건강이 따라주었기 때문일 것인데 그 건강을 지켜준 효성이 없었다면 가능한 일이었을까 하는 생각을 했다.
건강은 섭취하는 음식에서도 많은 영향을 받지만 마음이 편해야 즉 스트레스를 받지 않아야 장수할 수 있다는 것은 누구나 안다.
그래서 옛날부터 전해 내려오는 풍속에 부모가 돌아가시면 잘못모신 죄인이라고 생각하여 굵은 삼베옷을 입고 삼베두건을 머리에 쓰고 볏짚으로 만든 짚신을 신고 지팡이를 짚고 볏짚으로 베개를 만들어 짚고 서서 슬프게 곡을 하며 조문객을 맞이했던 것이다.
40년전으로 세월을 거슬러 가보면 부모의 묘옆에 움막을 짓고 이발도, 수염깎는 것도, 목욕도 하지 않고 3년상을 지냈던 시묘의 풍속이며 집안에는 빈소를 차려 아침, 저녁으로 빈소에 밥을 지어 절을 드린 후에 식사를 하였고 초하루, 보름에는 곡을 하며 삭망을 하였던 것이다. 이러한 관습은 세상 살이가 복잡해지고 과학이 발달하면서 편하게 살려는 편의주의 때문에 40년 전만해도 볼 수 있었던 풍속이 점점 사라져 없어졌지만 부모가 돌아가신 것이 자식이 봉양을 잘못하여 돌아가신 것이라는 죄인의 마음을 가지는 것은 그때나 지금이나 기본적인 마음이다.
그런데 어머니를 104세까지 마음을 편하게 해드리고 영양있고 맛있는 음식을 가려가며 드렸을 것이요, 조금만 몸에 이상이 와도 병원가기를 게을리 하지 않았을 것이요, 어머니 말씀에 대꾸보다는 순종했을 것이 아니겠는가?
일과를 마치고 일찍 집에 돌아와 어머니 곁에서 이런저런 이야기를 들려 드리고 혼자 심심하게 하지도 않았을 것이다. 그렇다면 이보다 더한 효자가 어디 있겠는가? 또 바쁜 일로 가득찬 아들만의 마음으로는 힘들었을 것이니 부인의 효성 즉 효부가 아니고서는 불가능한 일이었을 것이다. 퇴근 후에 만날 약속을 하지 못한 것이 빨리 집에 들어가 어머니의 뒷바라지 때문이라는 것도 알게 되었다.
평범하게 생각했던 분이 효자라고 생각을 하자 내 스스로 부모님께 효를 다하지 못한 죄책감으로 후회가 밀려왔다.
한자의 효(孝)란 글자를 보면, 원래 늙을 로(老)자를 아들 자(子)자가 업고 있는 모양을 한 것으로 효의 본 뜻이기도 하다. 이 뜻대로 늙은 부모를 업듯이 항상 곁에서 모시며, 부모가 주무시는 겨울 방은 따뜻한가, 한여름은 덥지는 않는가, 좋아하시는 음식은 어떤 것이며 반찬은 어떤 것을 해드렸는가? 이런 것을 하나하나 챙겼을 것이다.
자식이 연로하신 부모를 공경하는 마음이 지극할 때 부모는 마음이 편하고 마음이 편하면 스트레스를 받는 일이 없고 진노할 일이 없으면 마음에 충격을 받지 않음으로 건강에는 이보다 더 좋은 일이 없을 것이다.
아무리 좋은 음식 진수성찬을 해드린다고 해도 마음에 평안이 없으면 몸에 이롭지 못한 것이다. 그렇다. 부모님 곁에서 그 마음을 편하게 한다는 것은 무척 어려운 것이다. 그런데 이종화 씨는 복잡한 세상을 살면서 요즈음도 서울대, 연대, 고대의 유수한 대학의 평생교육원을 다니며 공부하는 일을 조금도 게을리 하거나 쉬는 일이 없다.
80을 바라보는 나이에 요즈음처럼 복잡한 세상에 보기드문 효자이면서 어떻게 배움을 계속할 수 있는 것일까?
효를 말하기는 쉽다. 돈주고 맛있다는 음식, 좋은 옷을 사들고 부모를 찾기는 어려운 것이 아니다. 또 관광회사의 권유에 따라 효도한다고 효도관광을 시켜드릴 수도 있다. 몸에 좋다는 약을 사드릴 수도 있다. 그러나 가까이에서 부모님 모시고 아무 불평없이 살기는 보통 어려운 것이 아님을 알고 있다.
험한 세상을 힘들게 살아가면서 부모님을 모시고 한집에서 아무 불평없이 살아가고 있는 사람들이 과연 몇 명이나 될까? 부모님을 모셔야 된다고 하면 결혼하겠다고 나서는 젊은 여인들이 있을까? 부모가 편찮으시다면 요양소에 선뜻 맡기고 나타나지도 않는 사람들이 많다고 들었다. 그사람들이라고 효도를 모를까? 아니다. 효를 알고 모르고를 떠나서 설사 안다고 해도 실천하기란 쉽지 않기 때문이다.
효를 행하지 못하는 사람도 자기 나이가 많아지면, 몸이 불편할 때 자식들이 본 대로 할 것이라는 것도 알 것이지만 효를 행하기는 더 어려운 것이다.
우리 나라가 출산율이 세계에서 가장 적은 나라라고 장래를 걱정하는 목소리가 많다. 옛날에는 자식이 울타리라고들 했다. 그러나 지금은 그 말이 현실에 맞지 않는다는 생각에서 자식 낳기를 거부하는 것일 수도 있다. 자식은 부모를 향하여 효를 행한다거나 울타리가 되기보다는 부모가 양육과 교육을 맡는 것은 기본이고 유산을 물려주어야 할 짐까지 떠맡게 되기 때문일 것이다.
우리 나라는 유교가 관습적으로 정신세계를 지배해오던 나라로 유학이 나라를 지배하면서 파당을 지어 노론, 소론, 남인, 서인으로 당쟁을 일삼다가 외세의 침략으로 나라를 지키지 못한 근대사의 결과로 일본이 36년을 지배하면서 2차대전의 종전까지 우리는 독립을 열망했던 것이다.
그러다가 우리에게 찾아온 식민지에서의 해방은 강대국의 점령으로 강산이 남북으로 분단되는 슬픔의 역사가 시작되면서 서방의 풍속이 급속도로 스며들게 되자 국민들의 정신을 지배하던 풍속이나 관습이 하나 둘 사라지고 법규에 정하지 않은 것은 지키지 않게 되었고, 누가 뭐라고 하던 자기의 주관대로 살면 된다는 개인주의가 판을 치는 세상이 되어 가치관도 도덕관도 다 자기주장대로 이끌어가는 판국에 효를 말한다는 것은 귀에 들리지 않을 수도 있다. 그러나 대다수의 사람들에게는 효의 세계는 가장 기본적이면서 행복하게 살아갈 수 있는 가치이자 질서일 수 있다는 생각에서 효를 생각해 보는 것이다.
