진시황은 산동성으로 순행하던 여로에서 49세에 객사를 하였다. 이 기회를 놓치지 않고 간신 이사와 환관 출신인 조고가 권력을 가로챈 다음 충신들을 모두 다 죽이고 <지록위마(指鹿爲馬)>에 찬동하는 간신들만 거느리고 왕권을 전횡하자 세상민심이 흉흉해지고 각처에서 반란군이 일어났다.
진승과 오광이 900여 명의 농민군대를 이끌고 단숨에 진나라에 입성하였다. 점령지에장초라는 나라를 세우고, 먼저 법도를 정비한 다음 왕위에 오른 진승은 옛 여섯 나라의 귀족들과 여러 반대 세력을 통합하여 진(秦)의 수도 함양으로 진격하였다. 이를 보고 놀란 강동의 회계 군수 은통은 오중에 있는 항량을 불러 의견을 나누었다. 항량은 옛 초나라 명장이었던 항연의 아들로 고향에서 살인을 하고 조카인 항우와 함께 오중으로 도주하여 살고 있었으나 뛰어난 통솔력을 발휘하여 그 지역의 실세(實勢)가 된 야심가였다.
회계군수 은통이, “지금 강서 지방에서는 모두들 진나라에 반기를 들었는데 이것은 하늘이 준 기회인 것 같소. 먼저 선수 치면 남을 제압할 수 있으나 때를 놓치면 남에게 제압당하게 될 것이오. 나는 당신(항량)과 환초를 장군으로 삼아 군사를 일으키고 싶소.”라고 회유하였다. 항량을 이용하여 출세하려는 속내를 감추었지만 항량은 은통의 마음을 환하게 읽을 줄 아는 권모술수에 도통한 사람이었다.
“군사를 일으키려면 환초부터 찾아야 하는데 그의 행방을 아는 자는 저의 조카 항우뿐입니다. 지금 밖에서 기다리고 있으니 조카로 하여금 환초를 불러오게 하심이 어떨는지요.”
“그럼 조카를 들어오게 하시지요.”
항량은 밖에 있는 항우에게 다가가서 귓속말로 속삭였다. “내가 눈짓을 보내면 지체 없이 곧(則) 은통의 목을 쳐라.” 향우가 방에 들어와서 군수에게 인사를 마치기가 바쁘게 숙부의 신호가 떨어졌다. 천하제일의 검객(劍客)인 향우의 칼이 피를 튀기며 은통의 목을 날려버렸다. 먼저 선수 치면 남을 제압할 수 있다는 고사성어 <선즉제인(先則制人)>이 연출되는 무서운 장면이었다.
항량은 곧이어 관아를 점령한 다음, 회계군수가 되어 8,000여 명의 군사를 이끌고 함양을 공격하던 중 전사하였다. 뒤를 이은 항우가 유방과 더불어 진나라를 멸망시켰다. 당시의 항우군사는 유방군사보다 훨씬 더 막강하였지만 천하는 양분될 조짐이 보였다. 천하통일을 기하자면 유방을 제거하는 것이 시급한 과제였다.
유방을 죽이기로 작심한 항우가 <홍문(鴻門)의 연희>를 마련하여 패공 유방을 초대하였다. 이를 눈치 챈 유방의 모사(謀士)인 장량의 기지로 패공은 죽음의 함정에서 간신히 탈출할 수 있었다. 백척간두에서 구사일생으로 살아남은 유방은 만백성들에게는 명분을 얻을 수 있었고, 장량과 한신의 도움을 받아 승승장구(乘勝長驅) 기세를 올리게 되었다. 선즉제인에 실패한 항우는 평생토록 유방과 싸우다가 오강(烏江) 가에서 천추(千秋)의 한을 남기고 자진하는 최후를 맞이하였다.
요즘 지방자치단체장과 지방의원 선거 날짜가 다가오자 <선즉제인>을 실행하기 위하여 온갖 희귀한 행사가 경향 각지에서 펼쳐지고 있다. 그 가운데 출판기념회도 한 몫을 담당하고 있다. 단체장에 입후보할 사람이 자전 에세이집을 만들어 출판기념회를 핑계 삼아 거창한 정치행사를 연출하는 장면이 그것이다. 평소에 문학서적을 전혀 읽지 않은 문외한이 남이 써준 책으로 생색을 내면서 문화를 사랑하는 단체장이 되겠다고 밥 먹듯 거짓말을 내뱉고 있다. 모 장관 말씀처럼 <X도 모르는 놈들이> 용천 떨고 있는 꼬락서니에 기(氣)가 막힐 노릇이다. 문학서적을 여러 번 출간해도 남들에게 폐 끼칠 것이 두려워 출판기념회를 아예 체념하고 지내는 내 처지에서는 더욱 그러하다.
요즘 정치지망생들의 행태(行態)를 보노라면 항우가 천 추의 한을 머금고 읊은 자작시 <역발산기개세(力拔山氣蓋世)>가 생각난다. 세태를 논하며 분노의 술잔을 들고 있는 손등에 시퍼런 심줄이 튀어나와 사지육신이 떨리지 않을 수 없다.
지금 시중에서는 개똥보다 더 더러운 정상배(政商輩)들의 창문(娼文)이 항우의 피 묻은 칼보다 더 악랄하게 범람하고 있다.
