사람마다 오늘의 사회가 안고 있는 병폐를 개탄한다.
황금만능주의에 찌든 이성마비의 인간상을, 또는 인간성 상실로 인한 비인간적인 작태를 고발하는 목소리가 그 어느 때보다도 높다. 하지만 이와 같은 우국지사적(憂國之士的) 비분강개론(悲憤慷槪論)도 저 거대한 산업사회의 물결 앞에서는 그저 한줌의 포말로 스러지고 말 것을 생각하니 그저 안타깝기만 하다.
이익이 있는 곳에 탐욕이 따른다고 했던가. 이미 상인기질이 보편화 되어버린 산업사회의 풍조 앞에서 과연 어떻게 해야 인간의 선성을 회복할 수 있을 것인가를 자문해 본다. 굳이 맹자의 성선설을 들먹이지 않더라도 인간의 참 행복은 진선미를 추구하는 삶 속에 깃들어있다고 하였는데, 어찌하여 이토록 엇박자로만 나가고 있는가. 지도자마다 외쳐대는 구호는 거창하다. 정의사회를 구현하는 국리민복에 이바지하겠다는 그 당당한 부르짖음. 그러나 이것이 한낱 공허한 메아리로만 돌아오는 서글픈 현상 앞에서 우리는 그 무엇으로 위안을 삼아야할지 모르겠다.
그 많은 종교인의 기도와 설법도 아스피린 같은 일회성 약효밖에 없는 것일까... 기도 따로, 생활 따로, 구호 따로, 행동 따로 라고 일갈한 어느 시인의 냉소적인 시구가 떠오른다. 또한 ‘현대사회에 있어서는 인간의 이기심을 앞지를 수 있는 그 어떤 이념이나 가치관도 존재할 수 없다’고 극언한 어느 윤리학자의 강론도 새삼스러운 의미로 다가온다.
책을 멀리하고 사색의 뜰을 외면하고 있는 현대인의 마음갈피에 그 무슨 이념이나 가치관 따위가 비집고 들어 갈 틈이 있겠는가? 사방에서 들려오는 이 자조적(自嘲的인 넋두리에 귀를 기울여 본다. 정신적 가치에는 둔감해지고 물질적인 욕망에만 예민해져 가는 인간. 그리하여 끝내는 물신주의와 향락퇴폐주의에 함몰해 가는 인간양태. 이것이 바로 오늘날 우리사회가 안고 있는 고질적인 병폐라 함은 그 누구도 부인할 수 없을 것이다.
그러면 이와 같은 고질적인 병폐를 치유할 수 있는 방법은 없는 것일까. 본래 정신개발이니 이성회복이니 하는 문제는 그 어떤 물질발명이나 상품개발보다 더 힘들고 어려운 문제다. 그 옛날 한 사람의 군자나 현인이 탄생되기까지 우리 선인들은 얼마나 준엄한 조기도야(自己陶冶)의 과정을 겪어왔는지 되새겨보아야겠다. 사실 전 생애를 걸고 자기완성의 길을 정진해도 이룰까말까 하는 것이 인격수련의 과정인데, 그저 눈치동냥으로 몇 마디 듣고 익혔다고 해서 올바른 인간상(人間像)을 정립했다고 할 수는 없지 않은가.
원래 인격을 도야(陶冶)한다는 뜻의 한자를 가르칠 도(陶)와 잘 닦을 야(冶)이다. 그런데 여기서 가르칠 도를 빼고 야자만 쓰게 되면 그때는 모양낼 야(冶)로 뜻이 바뀌어 그저 야하고 천박하다는 의미만을 지니게 된다.
따라서 오늘날 유행되고 있는 ‘야한 것이 좋다’는 말은 그냥 짐승처럼 되고 싶다는 뜻을 은유적으로 표현할 끔찍한 말임을 알아야겠다.
이러한 시각으로 볼 때 올바른 가치관 확립을 위한 윤리니 도덕이니 하는 인성교육 문제는 전문적인 연구체제부터 갖추어 나가야 할 것이다. 현재와 같은 상식 수준의 교육제도나 일과성의 관심표명 정도로는 도저히 그 근본적 치유책에는 접근할 수 없는 것이다. 인간만사는 스스로의 마음에서 출발하는 것. 저 거대한 물신(物神)의 노예로부터 참인간으로 회복시키기 위해서는 우선 그 물신에 빼앗겼던 혼(魂)부터 찾아와야 한다. 이름 하여 이성의 회복이라고 해도 좋겠다. 이성이란 특별히 인간에게만 주어진 신의 선물인데, 왜 우리 인간은 이 귀중한 신의 선물을 포기하려고 하는가.
우리가 여름날 해수욕장에 가는 것은 건상을 증진하기 위해 가는 것이지 바다에 빠져 삶을 포기하기 위해 가는 것은 아니지 않는가. 지금 한창 물욕의 바다에 빠져 허우적거리고 있는 우리는 다시한번 참삶의 의미를 곱씹어 보아야겠다. 우리 모두 냉철한 이성을 회복하기 위하여.
