우수와 경칩이 지났으니 이젠 완연한 봄이라 해도 좋으리라. 하지만 그동안 하도 변덕스러운 날씨 때문에 고생했던지라 몸과 마음은 아직도 긴장을 풀지 못하고 있다. 지난해도 이맘때 폭설과 강추위가 엄습했던 것을 생각하니 새삼 기상이변에 대한 걱정을 누그러뜨릴 수가 없다.
사람들은 이런 봄추위를 가리켜 꽃샘추위라고 한다. 신(神)마저 시샘한다는 봄의 길목에는 의례 이런 짓궂은 훼방꾼이 찾아오게 마련이니 이것이 지나간 후에야 봄의 진미를 맛볼 수 있을 것 같다. 비 온 뒤의 하늘이 더 청명하듯 매운 한파가 지나간 후의 꽃의 향연은 한 층 더 황홀하게 열릴 것이다.
옛 선인들은 이런 꽃샘추위를 가리켜 “심술궂은 용두 할머니가 며느리 골탕 먹이는 추위” 라고 풀이했다. 집안에만 갇혀있던 며느리가 오랜만에 고운 옷을 차려입고 봄나들이를 하는 때에 갑자기 비바람을 일으켜 이를 방해하려는 심술궂은 장난이라는 것이다. 물론 이 설화를 표면적으로만 풀이한다면 사나운 시어머니의 심술에 비유할 수도 있겠지만 그러나 여기에 내재된 진정한 의미는, 봄이 되면 마음 들뜨기 쉬운 며느리들에게 유비무환(有備無患)의 경계심을 일깨워 주는 것이라 할 수 있다.
예로부터 우리의 선현들은 호사다마(好事多魔)라는 경구를 즐겨 써왔다. 이것은 대개 일상생활 속에서 발생하는 수많은 돌발 사고들이, 대개 좋은 일의 끝자락에서 일어난다는 경험을 중심으로 사전 경고의 뜻을 담고 있는 것이다. 따라서 새 며느리들은 항상 시어머니 앞에서처럼 잠시도 조심성을 풀어놓아서는 안 된다는 것을 훈고하고 있다고 해야겠다.
자연 현상으로 빚어지는 반갑지 않은 꽃샘추위. 이것에마저 각별한 의미를 부여하여 심적 해이를 예방해 온 조상들의 슬기가 놀랍기만 하다. 어디 그 뿐인가. 이 꽃샘추위와 거의 때를 같이하여 찾아오는 황사현상에 대해서도 우리 조상들은 일찍부터 긍정적인 자세로 수용하는 태도를 보였으니 말이다. 즉 이 황사현상을 가리켜 꽃눈을 싣고 오는 ‘흙비’라고 의미부여를 하였음은 매우 경이로운 착상이라 할만 하다. ‘흙비’가 지나가야 모든 초목이 튼실하게 새싹을 틔우게 된다는 이 의식전환이야말로 미리미리 그에 대한 기피증이나 공포심을 완화시킬 수 있는 놀라운 처방이었던 것이다. 황사가 싫으면 그 영향권에서 벗어나야 하는데 어디 그것이 쉬운 일이던가. 그렇지 못할 바에는 차라리 이 불편과 더불어 살아가야 하는 정신자세를 가다듬어야 했기 때문에 이런 ? 컥?발상전환을 시도했는지도 모른다.
황사바람은 몽골과 중국 북부지방의 사막지대에서 발생한 모래 먼지가 강한 편서풍을 타고 우리나라와 일본상공을 거쳐 태평양으로 이동하는 현상이다. 3월부터 5월 사이에 찾아오는 이 황사는 무려 7백만 톤의 먼지를 싣고 와 골고루 뿌려준 후 소멸한다.
오랜 세월을 통해 관찰 연구한 결과, 이 ‘흙비’ 속에는 규소를 비롯한 황산염과 질산염 등의 염기성이 함유되고 있어 날로 산성화되는 우리 땅을 중화시키는 효과도 가져다주고 있다고 한다. 그러니, 거부보다는 수용하는 자세로 전화위복을 창조해 낸 우리 조상들의 슬기에 감탄하지 않을 수 없다.
문득 어줍잖은 졸작시조 한 수를 떠올려 본다.
흙비야 알고 있다 속 깊은 너의 뜻을
희뿌연 황사먼지 뉘라서 좋으랴만
꽃눈 틔워 봄을 여니 내 어이 마다할까.
그러고 보면, 비록 흙비나 꽃샘바람이 불청객이라 하더라도 우리는 이것을 반가운 손님으로 맞이해야 될 것 같다. 산 넘고 바다 건너 멀리멀리 날아오는 그 흙비. 코 막고 눈 가리게 하는 불편이야 있겠지만 그토록 살포시 꽃눈 틔우고 물러가게 된다면 우리는 오히려 고맙게 여겨야 할 것 같다. 이것이 곧 저 얄밉도록 귀찮은 황사현상을 극복하는 길이 아닐는지...
이제 아무리 꽃을 시샘하는 늦추위가 기승을 부린다 해도 오는 봄은 꼭 오고야 말 것이다. 벌써 얼어붙은 꽃봉오리 속으로 스며드는 햇살이 전에 없이 따사롭게 다가온다.
