생각지도 않았는데 아이들이 왔다. 아직 애들이 어린 터라 명절 전에 준비 하자고 며느리를 부르지 않는다. 추석이래야 송편도 사다 쓰고 예배만 드릴 거니까 음식장만이 복잡할 것도 없다. 더구나 남편이 외아들이라 오는 사람도 없으니 우리 직계 가족만 모이면 된다. 단출하기 그지없다.
그래도 몇 가지 하는 음식이 쉴까봐서 되도록 늦게 하려고 저녁으로 미루어놓았는데 갑자기 예쁜 손님들이 들이닥치니 조금은 당황스럽다. 저녁을 차려먹이고 설거지를 한 뒤끝에 음식 몇 가지를 만들었다. 그동안에 아이들은 윷놀이에 게임에 정신없이 놀고 있다. 거들겠다는 며느리를 내일 네가 다 하라며 억지로 앉혀 놓았다.
한껏 기분 좋은 손자들의 웃음소리와 아들내외의 껄껄거림이 몸에 부딪힐 때마다 기쁨이 넘쳐난다. 어떤 음악이 그보다 더 좋으랴. 다행이 일거리가 적어서 얼른 끝내고 부엌에서 나왔다. 모처럼 명절전날 자고 가겠노라 가방까지 챙겨 들고 온 며느리를 불안하게 하고 싶지 않아서다.
서너 정거장 거리에 사는 애들인데 웬일로 자고 갈 생각을 했는지 기특하기 그지없다. 잠자리가 떠서 불편할 테니 그냥 가서 자고 내일 일찍 오자는 아들 말을 며느리가 막는다. 이왕 자려고 왔으니 예정대로 하자고 한다. 이불들을 모조리 꺼내고 이방 저 방에 자리를 펴주는데 자꾸 입이 헤벌어진다. 알밤을 바구니 가득안고 있는 기분이다.
사흘이 멀다 하고 보는 아이들인데 명절에 자러 왔다고 이렇게 감격하고 있다니 생각해보면 우스운 일이다. 함께 있어준다는 것, 관심을 갖고 배려해 준다는 것, 그것이 이토록 흐뭇하고 좋은 일인 것을 왜 노모는 계신다는 자체가 머리를 무겁게 한단 말인가? 효와 불효는 백지 한 장 차이인지도 모를 일이다.
추석이나 설날, 명절 때마다 귀성객들로 몸살을 앓는 도로를 보면서 꼭 저래야 하나 하는 생각을 했던 것은 젊은 날이었다.
언제부터인가 저 행렬이 점점 짧아질 것이라는 생각을 하게 되었고 허전해지기까지 했다.
그런 염려에 대해 쓸데없는 걱정이라고 핀잔이라도 주듯이 아직은 계속해서 귀성행렬은 길기만 하다.
벌써 설날 귀성차표도 다 동이났을 것이다.
우리네만의 얘기가 아니고 미국의 넓은 고속도로도 추수감사절 귀성차량으로 뒤덮인가고 하니 사람 사는 세상을 똑같은 모양이다.
아무튼 아직은 살만한 세상인 것 같다.
함께 있어주는 것이 가장 행복한 부모들의 시간임을 알아주는 자식들이 있으니 말이다.
그들의 밝은 얼굴이 기다리고 있는 한 노년은 결코 외롭지 않다.
매일 아침을 혼자 좀 먹으면 어떠랴.
