말을 믿을 수 없는 시대이다
30여 년 전의 일이라고 기억된다. 박경리의 소설 ‘불신시대’가 발표되면서 우리사회에 큰 파문을 일으킨 적이 있었다. 역시 작가나 시인은 새로운 말의 창조자라는 호칭을 받을 만큼 예언적 용어를 빚어내는 데는 귀재라 할 수 있다.
그런데 당초에는 그토록 충격적이던 불신시대란 말이 이제는 한 낱 일상용어가 되어 버린 것 같아 씁쓸하다. 현대를 일컬어 매스컴의 시대, 대화의 시대라고 해서 그런지 사람과 사람 사이에 주고받는 말도 너무 차고 넘치는 바람에 그만큼 신빙도(信憑度)도 줄어든 것 같다. 말이 많으면 그에 비례해서 쓸 만한 말도 적어진다는 옛말이 있는 것처럼.
과연 저토록 많이도 쏟아내는 말 가운데 믿을만한 말이 몇 퍼센트나 될까, 곰곰이 생각해 보면 고개가 갸우뚱거려진다. 말에 대한 믿음이 약해질수록 이를 변호하기 위한 말의 양은 더 늘어나게 마련이다. 그래서 끝내는 사람의 말은 믿을 것이 못 된다는 불신 때문에 사소한 거래까지도 각서나 보증 따위의 법적 뒷받침을 강요 받는 시대가 되어버리고 말았다.
언젠가 가깝게 지내던 친구 A는 평소 가장 믿었던 후배가 극한적인 용어까지 구사하며 쓴 각서를 내밀기에, 3개월 기한부로 어렵게 저축한 돈을 빌려주었는데 3년이 지난 오늘날까지 종무소식이라고 푸념하는 말을 들은 적이 있다. 그 각서의 내용대로 하자면 바로 구속이 되어야 하고, 어떤 벌 어떤 불이익도 달게 받겠다고 하였는데 어떻게 그대로 이행할 수 있겠느냐는 것이었다.
또, 평생 동안 교단생활을 하다가 정년퇴직한 모 교수는 평소 친자식처럼 믿었던 제자에게 자신의 퇴직금 전액을 빌려 주었다가 그대로 날려버려 여생의 호구지책이 막연하다고 하소연하는 것을 어느 신문지면에서 본적이 있다. 그 밖에도 절친한 친구사이에 보증을 서주었다가 패가망신 했다는 이야기는 이제 다반사처럼 되어 버렸다.
이렇게 약속이나 계약을 어긴 사람들의 공통점을 보면 평소의 친분관계로 보아 보통말로 가능한 것을 극한 용어를 써가면서 서약의 각서를 내민다는 것과 나아가서 약속을 어기고도 별로 죄책감 없이 그냥 안면을 바꾸어 버린다는 것이다.
그래도 옛날에는 고의든 아니든 간에 불신을 저지른 데 대해서는 그 과오를 씻으려고 애걸복걸도 하고 다시 신용회복을 위한 안간힘을 쓰기도 했다. 그런데 요즘 사람들의 자존심은 그것마저도 허락되지 않는 것인지, 반성보다는 자기변명과 합리화에만 급급해 하는 것 같다. 아니 배신자의 본색을 드러내려는 듯 오히려 뻔뻔스럽게 나오는 파렴치한도 있다.
그리하여 종내에는 평소의 친분이나 의리 따위도 아랑곳하지 않고 ‘어디 할 테면 해보라’ 는 식으로까지 나오니 마음 약한 사람으로서는 오히려 기가 질릴 수밖에 없다. 그래서 단 얼마라도 건지고 회복하려면 도리어 채무자에게 빌고 사정하는 저자세를 취해야 할 판국이라는 것이다. 사기를 직업으로 하는 사람들도 아닌데 이토록 고차원적인 술수를 쓰니 이제는 불신이란 말로만 경계하기에는 너무 약한 것 같아 신(新)자가 하나 더 붙게 된 모양이다.
하기야 국제조류에도 신냉전시대(新冷戰時代)니 신보호무역시대(新保護貿易時代)이니 하고 있는 판국에 신불신시대(新不信時代)란 말이 하나 더 생겨났다 해서 이상할 거야 없지 않는가. 거짓 말 하는 태도도 저렇듯 당당하니 어디 보통말로서야 거기에 대응할 수나 있겠는가.
이러한 불신사조는 사회 구석구석에 번지지 않는 곳이 없다. 어떤 학생들의 말을 들어보면 곡학아세(曲學阿世)하는 학자일수록 그 말이 세련되고 번지르르하니 그 강의를 어떻게 믿을 수 있겠느냐는 것이다. 또 일반대중들의 이야기를 들어보면 이미 속은 훤하게 들여다 보이는데도 눈 하나 까딱 않고, 또 온갖 미사여구(美辭麗句)를 동원하는 지도자들의 연설과 글을 어떻게 액면대로 믿을 수 있겠냐는 것이다. 이렇듯 기망과 호도수법이 횡행하게 되면 참마음을 가진 사람은 설 자리가 없어진다. 악화가 양화를 구축한다는 그레샴의 법칙이 여기에도 통용되고 있으니 말이다.
하지만 이제 우리의 생활도 날로 풍요로워져 가고 있다. 고도로 발전된 우리산업은 국제사회에서도 높이 평가되어 우리나라는 명실 공히 선진국의 문턱에 들어서고 있다. 이것도 따지고 보면 우리의 질 높은 상품의 신용도가 가져온 결실이라 할 것이니, 결국 믿음만이 최종 승리자가 될 수 있다는 교훈을 곱씹게 된다. 어찌 상품의 신용도뿐이겠는가. 우리가 무심코 내뱉는 말 한마디까지도 전 세계인 앞에 우리의 신용도를 높이는 일이 된다는 것을 깊이 음미해 보아야 할 것이다.
요즘 갑자기 남북 정상회담을 위요하고 찬반의 여론이 분분하다. 그토록 나라의 장래를 위한 결단이었다면 왜 정권 초기에 결행을 하지 않았는가? 지금 정권말기에 그것도 대선이라는 격전을 눈앞에 두고 국면전환을 꾀하는 듯한 인상을 풍긴다는 것은 그대로 불신풍조만 가중될 뿐이다. 임기를 다한 정권이 국가중대사를 결정해 놓고 이것을 지속하기 위해서는 어느 특정 정당이 집권해야 된다는 논리를 구사한다면 이것이 곧 ‘신불신시대’를 부추기는 작태가 아니고 무엇이겠는가?
아직도 북한은 거짓과 위선의 왕국이라는 것이 세계인의 정평이다. 그런데 그들의 술수를 빌어 새 정권을 창출하겠다는 저의는 결코 용납될 수가 없다. 아무리 이념에 투철한 사회라 할지라도 그 본질이 거짓으로 차 있을 때는 걷잡을 수 없는 불행과 비극의 주인공이 된다는 사실을 우리는 너무나도 잘 알고 있기 때문이다.
참말만이 통하는 믿음의 사회, 인간의 존엄성이 보장되는 자유 민주주의 사회야말로 우리가 궁극적으로 추구해야 할 이상사회라 할 것이니, 이는 값싼 감상주의에 빠진 어설픈 통일론 보다 우선하는 참삶의 가치라는 것을 잊어서는 안 되겠다.
